For better or worse, I look at the world with a blog designer mind.
Here are two points I came across recently that succinctly sum up a
couple of concepts I’ve been thinking about.
Community. It’s one word but it is the most important
one when it comes to blogging. The only “blog metric” that makes sense
is the vibrant community of readers it has. Building a community around
your blog will bring you increased traffic, but how do you start? The
boilerplate response to building traffic is always “SEO, social
networking sites, and commenting on blogs” but it can be simplified to
“be part of a community”. The easiest way to seed your blog is with an
already existing community. But the only way to do that is to be part of
the community yourself.
The second is from metabestweblogwin.com
Ramit Sethi has the most successful personal finance
blog by nearly every measure. It has no ads. Zero. Nada. Zilch. And yet
he’s able to make money off it anyhow. For Ramit the blog is the ad, and he’s the product.
Emphasis above is mine. I’ll be writing some more on a blog
designer’s role in both participating in community and your “blog as ad”
in the coming days
